Bugatti CEO surprises by revealing he owns and drives a Volkswagen Golf R32 (Instagram @materimac)
Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac, is known for his innovative role in developing electric supercars, but his passion for cars goes beyond high technology.
His journey began with modifying an old BMW E30, transformed into an electric car nicknamed the “Green Monster,” which became the fastest-accelerating EV in 2011. Over the years, he has kept a collection filled with iconic BMW models, such as the M5 E39 and the M3 CSL E46, along with other sporty cars from the brand.
Interestingly, despite his love for BMW, Rimac also makes room in his garage for a Volkswagen Golf R32 Mk5, a five-door version with DSG transmission. He appreciates the car so much that he’s considering a restomod to modernize the interior and add current connectivity technologies, believing it would make the hatchback even more impressive.
Beyond his direct involvement with supercars, Rimac also helped shape the future of Bugatti by convincing the Volkswagen Group not to turn the Chiron’s successor into an electric SUV. Instead, he approved the Tourbillon, a hybrid hypercar with a naturally aspirated V16 engine, preserving the brand’s enthusiast spirit.
He joins other car-loving CEOs, such as Christian von Koenigsegg and Ivan Espinosa of Nissan, who show that there’s still room for exciting vehicles amid the electrification and standardization of the industry.
